Good ESMO 2026 Madrid transport comes down to four journeys: Barajas to IFEMA when you land, the morning run from your hotel, moving colleagues as a group, and the trip back to the airport on the final day. This guide takes each one in turn, with the details that actually change the plan: IFEMA’s current entrances, the EU’s new border checks and a clock change that falls in the middle of the congress.
We’re a Madrid chauffeur company with years of airport and corporate-event work, and we checked the access details below against IFEMA’s official pages on 9 October 2026. IFEMA has been reworking its entrances this year, so look at its How to get here page again in the week you travel.
ESMO 2026 at a glance
- Dates: Friday 23 to Tuesday 27 October 2026.
- Venue: IFEMA MADRID, Avenida del Partenón 5, 28042 Madrid.
- Metro: Feria de Madrid station on Line 8, which exits at the South entrance.
- Taxis and private-hire cars: a dedicated entry point at the North entrance.
- Airport: IFEMA puts Barajas about 10 minutes away.
- Parking: IFEMA’s car parks are open from 07:00 to 22:00.
- Clock change: Spain’s clocks go back one hour at 03:00 on Sunday 25 October.
While it upgrades the venue, IFEMA is asking ESMO visitors to use public transport where they can, especially Line 8. Keep these seven points in mind, because they shape every ESMO 2026 Madrid transport decision below.
Madrid airport to IFEMA on arrival

Barajas has two terminal complexes about 4 km apart: Terminal 4, home to Iberia and its oneworld partners, and T1–T2–T3, used by most other airlines. Non-EU travellers now give fingerprints and a facial image on their first entry under the EU’s Entry/Exit System, so the first landing of your trip may take longer than usual. Spain doesn’t publish live queue times, so build in slack rather than guessing.
You have three realistic options:
- Metro Line 8. Feria de Madrid is one stop from Aeropuerto T1-T2-T3 and three from Aeropuerto T4. Don’t get off at Barajas, which serves the town. Airport stations add a €3 supplement to single and 10-trip tickets. It works well with a cabin bag, less so with two suitcases and a poster tube.
- Taxi. Ranks sit outside every arrivals hall. IFEMA lies outside the M-30 ring road, so the €33 airport flat fare doesn’t apply; you pay the airport minimum fare, and longer routes run on the meter.
- Pre-booked car. Your driver tracks the flight and waits in arrivals, with 60 minutes of free waiting from your actual landing time, enough to absorb a slow passport queue. A Royal Ride airport transfer can stop at your hotel to drop bags, then continue to IFEMA’s North entrance.
Hotel areas and the daily run

Where you sleep decides most of your ESMO 2026 Madrid transport. IFEMA’s partner-hotel list spans three broad areas:
- Beside the venue: Campo de las Naciones, Barajas and Valdebebas. The shortest mornings, but quieter evenings.
- Castellana and Chamartín: the business district, where Line 8 starts at Nuevos Ministerios. Chamartín station is roughly 9 km from IFEMA.
- The centre: Plaza de España, Sol and Gran Vía. Best for dinners, longest commute; Atocha station is about 17 km away.
If you’re still weighing how to get to IFEMA each morning, think about the hour as much as the distance. Weekday commuter traffic builds on the M-40 and A-2 approaches, and most delegates are aiming for the same first sessions. A fixed-time IFEMA hotel transfer, booked for each congress day, takes the taxi queue at the hotel door out of your morning and drops you at the North entrance.
Plan the evening return just as carefully. “Meet you outside IFEMA” is too vague when thousands of delegates leave at once, so agree the North entrance pickup point and a phone number in advance.
One date to flag: the clocks go back at 03:00 on Sunday 25 October. Phones update automatically; hotel alarm clocks may not. Any pickup booked for that morning runs on the new time.
Moving a pharma team: vans and minibus

For company teams, ESMO 2026 Madrid transport is mostly a luggage question. Count suitcases, poster tubes and booth kit, not just people, then match the vehicle:
| Group size | Vehicle | Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 people | Executive car | 3 passengers, 3 bags |
| 4–6 people | First Class Van | 6 passengers, 6 bags |
| 7–8 people | Standard Van | 8 passengers, 8 bags |
| 9–16 people | Minibus | 16 passengers, 16 bags |
Teams flying in from several countries rarely land together. Book one vehicle per wave of arrivals instead of one large vehicle waiting for the last flight. For client dinners or visits away from IFEMA, an hourly booking of 2 to 12 hours keeps the same driver with the group. Our Sprinter Class service is built for this kind of multi-stop corporate day.
Departure day: when to leave IFEMA

ESMO closes on Tuesday 27 October, a normal working day in Madrid. Plan the last leg of your ESMO 2026 Madrid transport backwards from your airline’s check-in deadline:
- Confirm your departure terminal. It may differ from your arrival one; Air Europa, for example, uses T1 for non-Schengen flights and T2 for Schengen ones.
- Allow for T4S. Iberia and oneworld flights outside the Schengen area check in at T4 but board at the T4S satellite, an underground train ride away. Add 25 to 30 minutes.
- Expect an exit check. Non-EU passengers are recorded in the Entry/Exit System on the way out too.
- Collect bags early. If your luggage is at the hotel, add that stop and confirm the time with your driver the day before. Hotel pickups include 15 minutes of free waiting.
If your last session runs into the afternoon, an evening or Wednesday-morning flight leaves room for M-40 traffic and a slow security queue. Book the IFEMA pickup for a fixed time rather than relying on the taxi rank.
